Ursuline convent in 1920

The Ursulin monastery at Tjelaket (now Jaksa Agung Suprapto Street) was built in 1920. Now the building is still the same.

Hotel Mabes 1939

The 1939 photo is little different from the 1936 photo. This photo shows many olden days vehicles as well: cars, bus, bicycles and we meet the tricycle minibus again. Drugstore “MIM” changed name into “Malangsche Apotheek”. The trees that were too close to the intersection have been removed. And behind the hotel a transformator station just has been built. The shape of the hotel building looks like a steam ship and the style is “streamline moderne”. During the 1950s this building served as a YMCA hotel.
Now the building is demolished and a big and ugly BCA bank building took over its place.

Hotel Mabes 1936

This photo shows the corner Kayutangan – Riebeeck Street (Kahuripan Street now). At the middle of the intersection is a traffic light hanging on cables. Many traffic crosses this intersection. We can see pedestrians, a cow carriage, horse carriages, cars and a three cycle mini bus. We see the Hotel Mabes building and drugs store MIM. The shape looks like a steam ship and the style is “streamline moderne”. During the 1950s this building served as a YMCA hotel. Now the building is demolished and a big and ugly BCA bank building took over its place.

Twins Right House 1936

This photo shows the corner Semeru Street- Kayutangan. The photographer stands at the Riebeeck Street (now Kahuripan Street).
The right twin building used to be a branch of the bookshop “Sluyter - G.C.T. van Dorp & Co”.
At the intersection Kayutangan-Semeru-Kahuripan are 4 shop buildings made in 1935 in Art Deco style. Every building has a tower that can be used as an orientation mark for the traffic. In
the city planning by Thomas Karsten (1884-1945) this intersection was the centre of the road system in Malang. That’s why there are 4 attractive buildings there.

Kajoe Tangan in 1919

Already many houses are built along Kayutangan. The street is full
with wheel tracks of vehicles but the traffic is not that busy yet.

Kajoe Tangan in ±1900

This postcard shows Kayutangan at the end of the 19th century. It is uncertain where the word kayutangan originates from. Maybe from a kind of tree. Kayutangan (woodhand) is a street with shadow trees at both sides and the tree trunks split up in branches like a hand splits up in fingers. According some old people, the name Kayutangan originates from a direction sign to Surabaya that was located at the Charil Anwar statue in front of Kayutangan Church.
This direction sign was consisting of a hand that was made of wood. We can cross the street without watch out because there is still litte traffic. Pedestrians who wear sarongs walk at the middle of the road. The road is trafficked by a sado coach and a four wheel coach with an open tilt. Kayutangan still has a rustic mood.

Brantas River in 1930

This postcard shows a bridge at the Maetsuyker Street (now Tumapel Street) that crosses the Brantas river. At the background the Kayutangan church is visible.
