Jansen Hotel in 1910

The Jansen Hotel was situated at the Regent Street (now H A Salim Street). Around 1920 this hotel was demolished and replaced by shop houses. The horse carriage is at the southside of the central square (now Merdeka Selatan Street)

Jail East Square in 1910

The prison at the eastside of the central square (now Merdeka Timur Street) was built in 1829. Now at this place the Ramayana shopping mall is located.

Financial Inspection Malang

Financial Inspection Building in Malang. Located in the north plaza, built approximately in 1950.

Messigit Malang in 1913

The Jamik Mosque was built in 1875 at the east side of the central square in traditional Javanese architectural style. The building has a triple roof consisting of three levels.

Ursuline convent in 1920

The Ursulin monastery at Tjelaket (now Jaksa Agung Suprapto Street) was built in 1920. Now the building is still the same.

Hotel Mabes 1939

The 1939 photo is little different from the 1936 photo. This photo shows many olden days vehicles as well: cars, bus, bicycles and we meet the tricycle minibus again. Drugstore “MIM” changed name into “Malangsche Apotheek”. The trees that were too close to the intersection have been removed. And behind the hotel a transformator station just has been built. The shape of the hotel building looks like a steam ship and the style is “streamline moderne”. During the 1950s this building served as a YMCA hotel.

Now the building is demolished and a big and ugly BCA bank building took over its place.

Hotel Mabes 1936

This photo shows the corner Kayutangan – Riebeeck Street (Kahuripan Street now). At the middle of the intersection is a traffic light hanging on cables. Many traffic crosses this intersection. We can see pedestrians, a cow carriage, horse carriages, cars and a three cycle mini bus. We see the Hotel Mabes building and drugs store MIM. The shape looks like a steam ship and the style is “streamline moderne”. During the 1950s this building served as a YMCA hotel. Twins Right House 1936

This photo shows the corner Semeru Street- Kayutangan. The photographer stands at the Riebeeck Street (now Kahuripan Street).

The right twin building used to be a branch of the bookshop “Sluyter - G.C.T. van Dorp & Co”.

At the intersection Kayutangan-Semeru-Kahuripan are 4 shop buildings made in 1935 in Art Deco style. Every building has a tower that can be used as an orientation mark for the traffic. In

the city planning by Thomas Karsten (1884-1945) this intersection was the centre of the road system in Malang. That’s why there are 4 attractive buildings there.

The symetrical shopping complex, "The Twin Buildings" in 1935
